About Damascus Axes & Hatchets

What size hatchet do you need for camping?

The 7.5 inch hatchet rides in a pack and handles kindling, stakes and camp food. The 17 inch hatchets give a longer swing for splitting small rounds and limbing, still with one hand. For felling trees you want a two-hand axe, which we do not make; our size guide shows how each length is measured.

What comes with a Crownridge hatchet?

A hatchet is a short, one-hand axe, and that is what we forge. Each one ships with a char leather head mask with a pale welt, straw-gold stitching and a brass stud, at no cost. For a blade on the same trips, see our camp and bushcraft knives or a kukri for heavier chopping, and a hatchet makes a good gift for a hunter.

Common questions

What is the difference between a camping axe and a camping hatchet?

A hatchet is a short axe made for one hand, usually with a 12 to 16 inch handle, while a camping axe or felling axe takes two hands and a longer handle. We forge hatchets only, from 7.5 to 17 inches overall.

How big should a camping hatchet be?

For kindling, stakes and food prep, a small hatchet around 7.5 inches overall packs easily. For splitting small rounds and limbing, a 17 inch hatchet gives a longer one-hand swing. A two-hand axe is the tool for felling trees.

Does a camping hatchet come with a sheath?

It comes with a leather head mask rather than a blade sheath: a char leather cover with a pale welt, straw-gold stitching and a brass stud that closes over the edge. It ships with the hatchet at no extra cost.

Is Damascus steel good for a hatchet?

Yes. Our Damascus hatchet heads are pattern-welded from 1095 and 15N20 steel and take a keen edge that you can touch up with a file or a puck.

How much does a hand-forged Damascus hatchet cost?

Crownridge camping hatchets and axes run from $129 to $189, depending on size and handle. Every order ships free within the US, with 30-day returns on anything without engraving, and a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

How do you care for a Damascus hatchet?

Wipe the head dry after use, oil it lightly to stop rust, and store it in its leather head mask rather than loose in a pack. Never run it through a dishwasher or leave it wet.
