About Cowboy Knives & Bull Cutters

What is a bull cutter knife?

A bull cutter is a ranch working knife with a wide, straight or gently curved blade and a blunt or rounded tip. Our bull cutters run from 3 to 6.5 inches of blade, and a matched pair ships in one leather roll. Pair one with a horn handle for a traditional look.

What knife do cowboys carry?

A cowboy knife is a compact fixed blade worn on the belt, so the sheath matters as much as the steel. Ours ride in a char leather belt sheath with a brass stud. Choose Damascus for the pattern or rasp steel for a plain forge finish. Both rust if left wet, so wipe the blade dry. See more belt knives with sheath, stag handle knives and carbon steel knives.

Common questions

What are the best western style knives?

Look for a full tang, a blade short enough to wear on the belt, and a handle of horn, stag or bone. Our cowboy knives have blades of 3 to 4.25 inches, plain hand sharpened edges and a leather belt sheath. Pick Damascus for the pattern or rasp steel for a plain forge finish.

Why are they called bull cutter knives?

The name comes from ranch work: stockmen used this short, sturdy knife when turning bull calves into steers, and it stayed the everyday ranch knife after that. Today a bull cutter is a general working blade with a wide body and a blunt or rounded tip. Ours are full tang fixed blades in Damascus or rasp steel, each with a leather belt sheath, and the pair ships in a roll.

What do you use a bull cutter knife for?

Ranch chores: cutting twine and rope, opening feed sacks, trimming and general utility work around the barn and trailer. The rounded tip is less likely to catch than a point. It is a working knife rather than a hunting knife, so see our hunting collection for skinning.

Do these knives come with a sheath?

Yes. Every single knife comes with a Crownridge char leather belt sheath with pale welt, straw-gold saddle stitching and a brass stud, at no extra cost. The matched bull cutter pair ships in one leather roll instead. You can add engraving on a blade or sheath as a paid option.

How do I care for a rasp steel or Damascus cowboy knife?

Wipe the blade dry after use, especially after cutting anything wet, and rub on a thin film of oil before storing it. Keep it out of the sheath for long storage so moisture does not sit against the steel. Horn and bone handles dry out in heat, so keep them away from radiators and hot trucks.
