About Serbian Chef Knives

What is a Serbian knife used for?

A Serbian chef knife is used for chopping, slicing and outdoor cooking. The wide blade carries food from the board to the pan, and the curved belly rocks through herbs and onions. For a flatter edge that pushes through vegetables, try a santoku.

Is a Serbian cleaver the same as a chef knife?

A Serbian cleaver and a Serbian chef knife are the same family, a wide blade that chops like a cleaver but carries a chef knife's curved belly. Ours are hand sharpened. Some carbon steel blades keep forge scale on the upper blade. Browse Damascus cleavers, Damascus kitchen knives and carbon steel knives.

Common questions

What is a Serbian knife?

A Serbian knife is a wide, cleaver-like chef knife with a curved belly. It chops, slices and handles outdoor cooking. Ours have blades of 5.5 to 7 inches, full tang handles and a leather blade guard, in Damascus or carbon steel.

Which size Serbian chef knife should I choose?

Seven inches suits most cooks and gives the most room for chopping. The 6 and 5.5 inch blades are lighter and easier to control for smaller hands and smaller boards. Overall length runs from 10 to 12 inches, so check the board and drawer before you order.

What is the best Serbian cleaver knife?

The best one is the one that fits your hand and your cooking. Pick a 7 inch blade for chopping, a pakka wood or micarta handle for wet hands, and Damascus if you want a pattern. Carbon steel suits you if you prefer a plainer forge finish.

Do Serbian chef knives rust?

Yes, both the Damascus and the carbon steel ones rust if left wet. Dry the blade after each use, never put it in the dishwasher, and rub on a thin film of oil before storing. Carbon steel will darken to a patina, which is normal and protects the blade.

Do Serbian chef knives come with a sheath?

Yes. Each one comes with a Crownridge char leather blade guard with pale welt and straw-gold saddle stitching, at no extra cost. It covers the edge in a drawer or a pack. Blades can be engraved as a paid option.
