A 3 to 4 inch blade handles deer, while elk calls for closer to 4.5 to 6 inches to open more hide. This collection's blades top out at 7 inches for larger jobs. Gut hook patterns are in the mix too, for opening the belly without puncturing it. See the Damascus hunting knives for a longer field knife to pair with one.
Most skinning knives here are full tang fixed blades, built to take the twisting force of separating hide. A folding knife trades that rigidity for pocket carry; see the Damascus folding knives, or gifts for hunters for a present. Read the knife care guide to keep the edge and the leather in shape.
