    Overview

    What you are holding

A drop point curves the spine down to a low tip, so it stays controlled while you skin or open a joint. The Damascus blade sits ahead of a brass guard, and the handle is built from stacked layers of birch bark, capped with a black pommel. Each ring of bark shows as a thin line down the grip. Eleven inches overall, light enough to carry through a week of camp chores. Made to order. The fitted leather belt sheath is part of the knife: char leather, a pale proud welt, straw stitching, brass at the load points.

Every Ridgeback is forged to order in the same sequence and inspected against the spec standard before it ships; the Damascus pattern on yours will be its own.

    Steel and forge

    Forge-welded, folded, etched

Damascus blades are forge-welded from 1095 high-carbon steel and 15N20 nickel steel, drawn out and folded, ground, hardened and tempered, then etched so the layers show. Every knife is made to the same written standard and inspected against it before it ships.

    01 Forge weld

The billet is welded and drawn out at forging heat, then folded and welded again.

    02 Grind

The profile and the bevels are ground by hand, the tang and the spine trued to the drawing.

    03 Heat treat

The blade is hardened and tempered before the handle goes on.

    04 Etch and finish

The blade is etched so the pattern shows, the handle fitted and shaped, the edge sharpened and inspected.

    Sheath and engraving

    Carried, not boxed

This knife ships with a Crownridge char leather belt sheath, pale welt, straw-gold saddle stitching, brass stud; included at no extra cost. Leather holds moisture, so store the knife out of it between seasons.

Engraving is cut on either surface, the blade or the sheath, at $19.00 a surface. Text or a plain logo, in one colour, the surface's own; nothing is printed. Choose the surfaces above the button and type the text, and you see it drawn where it will be cut before you order. An engraved piece can only be returned if it arrives defective.

    Carry

    • A strap holds the knife in
    • Leather: store the knife out of it between seasons
    Care

Three habits, a lifetime of use

    After use

Wipe the blade dry and rub on a little oil. Never the dishwasher. A carbon-steel blade takes a grey patina with use; that is not rust.

    Storage

Store it dry and out of the sheath for long stretches, because leather holds moisture. A light coat of oil before the off season.

    Sharpening

A few strokes on a fine stone at the factory angle keep the edge; a strop between sharpenings. The care guide.

    Questions

    Before you order

The answers you look for most, from the policies and the forge.

Something else? Ask the forge, replies within one business day.

    How long until it ships?

A knife with no engraving is dispatched in the business days shown above the button. Add engraving and it is forged and cut for you, which adds about four days. Either way it is delivered 5 to 8 business days after dispatch, within the United States.

    Can I return it?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unused, with the sheath, box and papers. On a change of mind the $9 return label is deducted from the refund. A defect is replaced free. An engraved piece can only be returned if it arrives defective.

What does the lifetime forge warranty cover?

Every forge weld and every handle fit, for the life of the knife, for the original purchaser. Normal wear, sharpening and damage from misuse are not defects.

    How does engraving work?

Choose the surfaces offered above the button, each priced beside it: the blade, the leather sheath, slip or guard, and the handle where it takes a mark. Wooden handles and the knife roll are not engraved. Type the text and you see it drawn where it will be cut. It takes text or a plain logo, cut into the surface in one colour, the surface's own; nothing is printed. A logo goes on the same way: upload it in the same box, PNG, JPG, SVG or PDF, up to 18 MB, cut in one colour like the text. Check the spelling: an engraved piece can only be returned if it arrives defective.

Will the knife look exactly like the photographs?

The photographs are studio views of this model. A Damascus pattern is its own on every blade, and natural handle materials vary in figure and colour. The lengths hold to the spec standard: within 3 mm of the listing.

How do I look after a carbon-steel blade?

Wipe it dry after use and oil it lightly. Keep it out of the dishwasher and out of the sheath for long storage, because leather holds moisture. A grey patina with use is normal and not rust.
