About Micarta Handle Knives

What is a micarta knife handle?

A micarta knife handle is a composite of cloth layers, such as canvas or linen, set in resin and pressed under heat. Micarta does not soak up water and keeps its grip when wet. It does not dry out or crack in heat as wood can. For a natural look, see our wood handle knives or stag handle knives.

Which knives come with a micarta handle?

Outdoors, you get hunting knives plus a bowie, a kukri, a skinning knife, a tracker, a bushcraft knife and pocket knives. In the kitchen, there is a santoku, a Serbian chef knife, a meat cleaver, a paring knife, a utility knife and a carving knife and fork set. The rest of the kitchen knives use other handles. Each comes with its own leather sheath, slip, guard or roll. Dry the steel after use, as the care guide explains.

Common questions

What is a Micarta knife?

A Micarta knife is a knife with a handle made of Micarta, a composite of cloth layers such as canvas or linen set in resin and pressed under heat. The handle is the Micarta part. The blade is separate steel: in this collection about half are pattern-welded Damascus and the rest are plain steel.

Are Micarta knives good?

Micarta is a good handle if you want grip in wet hands. It does not soak up water, so a rinsed knife or a wet day does not loosen your hold. The handle is only half the knife, though: Damascus and carbon steel blades still rust if left wet, so dry and oil them after use.

What happens to Micarta when it gets wet, and does it crack?

Micarta does not soak up water, so it does not swell and it keeps its grip when wet. It also does not dry out or crack in heat as wood can, which suits a camp fire or a hot kitchen. Wipe the handle clean after use, and dry the steel as well.

Is Micarta the same as G10?

No. Both are handle composites, but G10 is fiberglass cloth in epoxy, while Micarta is cloth such as canvas or linen in resin. This collection leaves G10 out: every knife here has a Micarta handle, and each product page names the handle material so you can check before you buy.

Can a Micarta handle be engraved?

The blade and the leather guard or sheath can be engraved as a paid option, priced per surface. The handle is not offered for engraving on every knife, so each product page shows the surfaces that knife takes. The leather knife roll a set ships in is never engraved.
